ATL - Advanced Transmission Line

The hallmark of PMC’s renowned, natural sound lies in its Advanced Transmission Line (ATL) bass-loading technology, a system that has been professionally tested and trusted globally. For a deeper understanding of how it works, explore more from the tech lab at PMC.

A transmission line speaker design positions the drive unit at the end of a long, highly-damped tunnel that absorbs unwanted mid and high-frequency energy emitted from the rear of the driver. Meanwhile, it allows the lowest frequencies to exit the line in perfect phase with the front-facing radiation, significantly boosting bass performance. This technology is effective across a wide bandwidth of approximately two octaves, centered around the transmission line's resonant frequency. Within this range, it tightly controls the movement of the drive unit, dramatically reducing distortion and enabling higher output levels.

The resonant frequency of a transmission line is determined by the acoustic length of the line, which corresponds to one-quarter of a wavelength. Achieving this balance requires careful consideration of numerous factors, from the driver’s parameters to the length, taper, profile, and foam placement within the line.
