Product Highlights

The Audio Research SP16 tube preamplifier features a pure Class A circuit, an integrated MM phono stage, five single-ended RCA inputs, and dual main outputs. Acting as the command center for a high-fidelity system, it routes sources while preserving harmonic integrity and fine musical detail. Its audio path employs six 12AX7EH dual triodes, dividing three valves for vinyl playback and three for line amplification. A microprocessor governs a 70-step digitized analog volume ladder paired with a discreet front-panel LED array. Cathode-follower outputs deliver low impedance, driving twin power amplifiers simultaneously for effortless bi-amplification.

Critical consensus celebrates the preamplifier as an exceptional performer that delivers authentic reference sound. Ken Kessler praised its seamless fusion of vintage valve warmth and modern transparency, calling it a triumph for company founder William Johnson. The SoundStage Network honored the unit with a Reviewers' Choice distinction, applauding its expansive soundstage, pitch-perfect instrumental timbre, and dynamic agility.

Welcoming this preamplifier into your audio chain introduces an effortless sense of flow and dimensionality that solid-state alternatives often miss. Its refined vacuum-tube topology breathes life into recordings, uncovering subtle cues with palpable realism and tonal depth. For the listener seeking classic tube liquidity alongside dependable modern operation, it remains an enduring centerpiece for daily listening.
