The Third Pillar of Synergy: Grounding

This is Part 3 of our 6-part series on the Six Pillars of Synergy with Synergistic Research founder Ted Denney. Each pillar addresses a different domain where your system's electromagnetic environment is being shaped, for better or worse, whether you're managing it or not.

There's a layer of limitation in most hi-fi systems that nobody talks about, not because it's subtle, but because most people don't know it's there.

It's not in the components. It's not in the cables. It's in the reference point every single circuit in your system is built on.

The ground.

"Ground defines the ceiling for the noise floor in your system. Nothing else you can do to improve that can get past the noise floor imposed by the ground."

That's not a peripheral observation. That's the entire argument for why grounding is the second pillar, and why addressing it changes more than most people expect.

What Ground Actually Is

Every component in your system shares your house ground. So does your refrigerator. Your HVAC. Your neighbor's dimmer switch. The router in the next room. Every one of those devices puts noise onto the ground, and that noise has nowhere to go except into the reference your entire system is built on.

Ground isn't a drain where noise disappears like magic. Ground is the point every circuit calls zero. If that reference is noisy, shifting, and undefined, everything riding on it moves with it. Every signal in your system is being measured against a moving target and that makes it even harder to find what your ear hears as “not quite right”.

Most systems have no grounding strategy at all. Chassis grounds float at whatever potential they find. Cable shields terminate into undefined references. The foundation is shifting sand, and the system performs accordingly.

A Different Approach

Traditional grounding gives excess energy somewhere to go, but doesn't quite resolve the whole issue honestly. Synergistic Research takes that further, actively stabilizing the ground reference and eliminating the high-frequency noise that rides it.

Ted was the first to build an active ground conditioner, over a decade ago, before the category existed.

The Active Ground Block SX, SR's most accessible active ground solution, has 33 ground points. Most competitors offer between four and six. The difference isn't just scale. It's architecture. Splitting the ground into multiple boxes from multiple manufacturers creates phase differentiation between those circuits. A single, unified ground ecology with 33 connection points avoids that problem entirely.

The Ground Block passes the ground through an electromagnetic cell, the same technology at the heart of the PowerCell conditioner, eliminating high-frequency noise that rides the safety ground from cell phones, Wi-Fi, and digital components. It then biases the ground with harmonics of the Earth's Schumann resonance. ELF/ULF biasing, the same principle used in the PowerCell, is applied to the reference point the entire system depends on.

What You Can Ground - And What You Shouldn't

Grounding isn't a universal apply-everywhere solution. Ted is specific about what benefits from it and what doesn't.

Components you can ground: sources, DACs, preamps, line conditioners, cable shields. Every time you add a ground connection to the Active Ground Block, the noise floor drops.

Components to avoid grounding: power amplifiers, powered subwoofers, and powered speakers. The interaction with those components' own ground circuits can be unpredictable.

Digital cables are a nuanced case. Sometimes grounding an Ethernet cable helps. Sometimes creating a galvanic break, deliberately not grounding it at a specific point, produces better results. The recommendation depends on the specific system and electromagnetic environment.

This is what makes grounding simultaneously one of the most impactful and most misunderstood pillars. The principle is simple. The implementation requires listening.

The Human Demonstration

At trade shows, Ted occasionally demonstrates grounding with something that stops people cold.

He runs a long cable from the Active Ground Block, and grounds a person sitting in the listening seat.

"When you tie the human into the circuit, because we are electrical circuits ourselves, it creates a biological tie to you and the system. That's called meta-grounding."

The system sounds different. Not just for the grounded person, for everyone in the room.

It's not a parlor trick. It's a demonstration of the same principle that drives the entire grounding pillar: the electromagnetic environment your system operates within is not separate from the physical space and the people in it. Everything interacts. Everything either contributes to coherence or chaos.

Grounding is the pillar that establishes which one it is.

What It Sounds Like When Grounding Is Right

The improvement grounding delivers doesn't show up in one frequency range or one specific quality. It shows up in the whole presentation.

"People who address grounding for the first time routinely say it sounds like they changed amplifiers. They didn't. They stabilized the reference everything else was already trying to work from."

The noise floor drops. Instruments separate. Spatial information that was being smeared by ground instability suddenly resolves. The stage finds its architecture. Low-level details that were always in the recording emerge naturally, not because anything was added, but because the noise masking them is gone.

It's often described as lifting a veil. That's pretty close actually. More accurately, it's removing a floor you didn't know was there.

The Bigger Picture

Power lays the foundation. Cabling unifies the signal. Grounding stabilizes the entire system.

When these three pillars work together, the sonic payoff compounds. Delivering clean power through coherent cables to a rock-solid ground reference elevates your system to a whole new level, operating from a baseline that unmanaged systems simply cannot reach.

The next pillar addresses something that operates even when all three of those are right, the ambient electromagnetic field the signal propagates through.
